Thailand aims to revive tourism amid pandemic

Thailand’s capital Bangkok was named the world’s most visited city in 2019.
With 40 million visitors – tourism is referred to as the engine driving the kingdom’s economy.
But with global travel halted during the pandemic, that engine is running on empty.
Al Jazeera’s Scott Heidler looks at the Thai government’s plan to bring tourists back to Thailand’s cities and beaches.

  • My friends have expressed anger at the racism towards foreigners which was highlighted by the tourism minister and others and say they will never return but will now holiday in the Philippines and Vietnam where it is much cheaper and in the case of the Philippines, English friendly. Quite sad Thailand is known for this existing problem. When a country relies on tourism, pretty dumb to be making racist comments on the news.

  • As far as I know, the government will not open up the border for all tourists freely. They will start with health tourism (patients who come to Thailand for surgery/treatment). The 14 days quarantine is included in the package responsible by designated hospitals/hotels. Another group is foreigners who come for business purpose and students from bubbling partnership countries. They will control the number of visitors and restrict the location you can/cannot go.

  • Sure they are, but…but….but, where are the millions with extra money for travel?

  • Before allowing in bubble tourists and big money businessmen tourists, Thousands of Thailand's citizen's stranded foreign spouses and children must be allowed to come home. They are full-time members of Thailand families and of Thai society! They must not be treated like tourists! It doesn't matter what the COVID-19 infection rate is in the country they are currently stranded. They must be allowed to obtain "Certificates of Entry" through that country's Thailand Embassy and be processed home using the same proven safe protocols and procedures in repatriating Thai Nationals. Of course, Expat will have to: Provide VISA, proof of insurance, certificates of health and prepay quarantine, and Covid-19 Testing cost and agree to download tracking App and produce travel itinerary and permanent residence location and register residence movement and any other requirements implemented by Thailand Authorities. Obviously, they must also agree to abide by all Thailand laws and regulations, and COVID-19 protective measures of social distancing, wearing of mask, washing, hands.

Thailand's proven ability to treat and process repatriated Thai Nationals that were found to be infected while in quarantine should alleviate everyone's fear of foreign spouses bringing disease to Thailand.

No one is more concerned about the health and safety of their Thai family than the Expat coming home.

Expat men and women have invested their lives in Thailand. They have married, built homes, and raised children in Thailand. Now they are not being allowed to ride buses, enter Wats, or even enter the country! Are Thailand's authorities blind to this callous discrimination? Is the land of smiles and peace to be turned into a land of racial discrimination and hate? I think not. This wonderful country and people will weather this storm and prevail over this pandemic of fear and mistrust. Thai people have shown they have the skill and ability to master this disease and now they must master their fears.

We must reboot and rebuild our tourist industry. We must prove to the world that our medical healthcare, social hygiene procedures, and hospitality are the best in the world. Um

  • The measures adpoted by Thailand are same as other countries did. External european borders are closed until first of July, and anycase no flights are available, but I hope all will go back as before Covid 19 outbreak, even if gradually. It could be a better time visit Thailand in the last part of this year, anycase will see what's going on.

  • Let’s face it no one , no matter what country it is wants to be on holiday wearing a face mask , having to download apps to be tracked to enter shopping malls and getting their temperature checked every place they go. I understand health and safety but Let’s get real ; the travel industry is done for !!!!

  • Neither flu nor dengue fever nor malaria has stopped tourists from visiting foreign countries. If they just stopped the over blown regulations and simply open up, the tourists would come without any further marketing.

  • need to allow incoming tourist flights. Need to remove current stupid covid insurance requirement. Need to remove the current medical certificate withing 3 days of travel… that is basically impossible to get in the USA. Need to hear from the King. The Monarchy has said nothing during this emergency. What does that mean. Military extra in control? Seems odd. Oh and currently there is a 14 day quarantine if one does arrive. So on a two week vacation one could not do anything!

  • Even if Thailand open's their borders, no travel insurance company will cover you and you won't be able to get into Thailand without travel insurance, plus 2 weeks quarantine when you arrive in Thailand and 2 weeks quarantine when you re enter back to your country, not worth it, only a vaccine can put this world back in order.

  • Did you forget the 14 days quarantine on arrival? With only 0,6% of their population tested, they might be far away from real numbers?
